As a teen, Greek mythology fascinated me, the gods and goddesses,
the half human/half animal beings going on wild adventures and having magical powers.
.
So like most of you, I know the myth of Persephone
.
How she was abducted by the god Hades, ruler of the underworld,
Through his scheming, she was forced to live for 3 months of the year, in the underworld.
The other nine she was allowed, after much bartering, to live with her mother.
And because of that story she is often named the bringer of spring, of new life and she assures the abundance of the harvests.
.
What the story hides, is the experience of women living in a time, where patriarchal powers had established themselves in ancient Greek.
Where women were forced into marriage, often taken away from their homes, without even their mothers knowing.
.
For a few days I had been wondering why she wanted to be called Persephone, but looking up her story it becomes clear what her message is.
.
To speak up against forced marriages, which even today, in our world , are sadly still happening
Where women are seen as less then, with no other value than keeping the house and bearing children
.
Let’s stand up, sisters, and break the cycle,
that has been going on for more than 4000 years
